Washington Square Lighting In March 2002, a group of North Beach merchants met with Friends of Washington Square to discuss lighting. The merchants' concern was that people avoided the Park after dark because the pathway through it was not sufficiently lighted. After several meetings, and a nighttime trip to the Park, it was decided to investigate possible locations for additional pole mounted lights, as well as using a different fixture atop the poles that would direct the light downward, and create less glare. Bob Mittelstadt has located a possible fixture. The Friends Committee has asked to see photos, or a tear sheet, of this fixture, as well as a cost analysis of the increased lighting project to present to the merchants, so that methods of funding can be considered. It will, of course, be necessary to contact the Landmarks Board for a Certificate of Appropriateness, when an approved scheme has neen achieved. |
